🎵That old devil called......🎵

Ok I think we need to formulate a care plan.

Yes yes let's do that but I'm not leaving Millie if she is upset

Well, I think you need to be the leader here. Look at all the other kids settled in.  You may need to use a bit of tough love.

Ok. I'm not using any type of tough love, I parent a totally different way so I'm not using the other kids as a measure.  I'm not prepared to leave her if she isn't ready as it will cause more problems in long term.

Millie, come and have ten seconds milk and then I'm going to go and walk the dog. Ok?

....milk...ok mummy you can go now. Bye.

She is always ok for me to leave if it's on her terms. I won't leave unless she is ok with it.

The pressure to abandon is immense.

It's when she says 'I wasn't ready for you to leave yet mummy' when I come back. 💔
I know some will think the use of the word abandon is ott....

I don't really think its abandonment btw, I know the staff are lovely. I know I'm not actually leaving her in a box on the street corner. It's Millie who feels it though, it's Millie that needs to get used to it and it's me that cops it! No coincidence her behaviour at home is radically different now to at nursery. And believe it or not I am not self sabotaging or projecting or unconsciously seeping my thoughts into her brain and manipulating her brain in some way. Oh would that I could!!

I actually would quite like a couple of hours.

But I have to admit that there gets a point where the effort to preserve Millie's future esteem can become...what's the word?....

The upping of connection need is intense.

Meltdowns - aaalll over the place from everyone must be changing seasons
Losing the Plot - made conscious effort to remain calm and not annoyed this evening. It worked well. Connection repaired.
Breastfeeding - milks sleeping. Resting. Having a break. Broken. Ok just ten seconds. What else will make you feel as much comfort and connection? Seriously you can't think of anything???

We are all Erica

Once again I find myself involved in another very upsetting and distressing separation case involving a family and their parenting practices being questioned.   This time I have known this family on-line for over a year, she is not an unknown face like Habiba, she has been 'part' of my life.  For  now and forever, the Henderson Family will be part of my life.

Erica and Jeffrey and their six children have been ripped apart and they are also an attachment parenting, home-schooling,  non-vaccinating family.  Non-vaccinators  are being vilified and this Jewish family is being persecuted in their own home by neighbours and the system.  Once again the issue here is an attack on natural attachment parenting and although this has scared and angered me, this time it is not just about those parenting styles, this about lives.  Real lives are being scrutinised and deemed wanting, .

Their SIX children have been removed and are currently placed in separate homes, separate homes which are non speaking English too.  To me *this* part is the most heartbreaking part of it all.  Not only do they have to endure the horrors of being wrenched from their parents, they have to suffer alone.

Please consider donating to this family, they have lost everything

The full details regarding the case are here but as part of the efforts being done, I made this video with thanks to Janel Mirendah for help reviewing:

We are all Habiba

My facebook has been inundated recently with news regarding a Morrocan woman and the separation from her 15month baby.  The full details of the whole situation are not known but one part is very clear:  because she did not complete part in a 'required' program in the shelter where she was taking refuge, her baby was taken away from her and she was asked to leave the shelter as she no longer had a dependency.  The 'required' program? She was to stop breastfeeding her daughter and take medication to dry up her milk. That is correct, she was separated from her daughter May 31, 2011 by the IMMF (Minor and Family Institute of Madrid - Instituto Madrileño del Menor y la Familia) for not completing a program of psychotherapy and 'maternal skills' because she refused to end her extended and on-demand breastfeeding relationship with her daughter Alma.

The report circulating on the maternal behaviour of Habiba with her daughter Alma is terrifying to say the least. It accurately describes in non complimentary terms the exact breastfeeding relationship I have had with my two girls, on demand and extended.  They receive milk from me as and when and ESPECIALLY when upset, since this is THE best method for calming almost EVERY situation.  The comments regarding food are clearly derisory of what most mothers AP or not, now simply do , baby led weaning. And the issue they have with Alma's 'sleep pattern' is laughable to me. Since bed sharing/co-sleeping is one of the main stays of AP parenting it is inconceivable to many of us that this could create such problems besides we all know what kids 'sleep patterns' are like never mind whether they co=sleep or not.

The greater issue here is an attack on natural attachment parenting and this is what scared and angered me the most.

I have found it hard to be too pushy because the facts of the case as I know them are very one sided.  I am all too aware that there are two sides to every story and I am not entirely clear on the full facts yet. (the wonderful world of internet).  The facts remain for me that this woman co-slept, so do I (a problem for IMMF) extended breastfed, so do I (a problem for IMMF) and baby-led weaned, so do I (a problem for IMMF).

"She is not aware of the inadequacy of certain behaviors which can involve risk and neglect". What exactly are they talking about here.  This is a huge statement...with wildly differing view points as I have experienced. cutlery or chair anyone?

If this IS the policy of the IMMF then it shows a very unfavorable view of the IMMF and what does that subsequently mean for the Spanish Government and policies at large and don't even get me started on society as a whole!!!  This is in clear violation of Article 8 which guarantees the right to family life and for the integrity of the family.  A public authority cannot interfere with this and if Spanish law allows it, then it appears that in doing so, the Spanish Government is breaching ECHR

To this end, we decided to join the International protests at Spanish Consulates around the globe and protest on behalf of Habiba and her daughter Alma.  I had hoped others would be able to come, but as it was very last minute for us, I knew I would be on my own!!  If the press don't pick up on this and more probing occurs because of this, more may need to be done.

We set off for Edinburgh in very high spirits, having explained to the girls that we were going to tell as many people as we could about a mother who had her baby taken away from her because she wanted to breastfeed (keeping it simple and relative).  Even on the bus into town to get the train, I talked to a few mothers who seemed genuinely horrified. One even said 'this is exactly what we do' (I invited her to our Nature in Nurture group as an asdie!!)

People looked at us and wondered.  I wondered if they would go home and google Habiba.

Maia wore her 'We are all Habiba' placard round her neck all day

and Ellie handed out the leaflets and asked passers by if they had a computer and would they sign the competition (petition). She completely chose her outfit herself, I wonder if she saw the black white theme on the poster in the morning and that influenced her choice!! The Woolfson flair for clothes and design perhaps? She does like to be matching although I think that might be my influence!!

When we arrived Ellie rang the door bell before I could stop her, which worried me a bit, because I didn't want to be papped out before we had even begun!! A man appeared at the door and asked if we wanted to come in, I said yes but later, once we have given out some leaflets (and tired the girls out to keep them from totally ransacking the Spanish Consulate!!!). Several staff came in and out the building and seemed fine that we were there, they drew the line at posters taped to the wall though!!  A police van drove past but I don't think they even noticed as I was sitting down at that point calming Maia

On the whole most people were interested.  I kept it short and simple, the people of Edinburgh were busy, it was lunch time, most had people to see, places to go, sandwiches to be eaten.  I was on my own.  I tried my very bestest to keep my grumbling and vitriolic remarks to myself about the ones who said no and walked by without even hearing.

After an hour, the girls started getting edgy and were wanting to go inside the Consulate, so once all the leaflets were gone and they had opened back up for lunch, we went inside and spoke to the High Heejun himself, which was unexpected.  I had thought I was going to give my papers to his staff.

He was a very dashing Spanish bloke who spoke in a fantastic accent and spoke very very fast and with Maia on my knee asking for green paperclips for her and red ones for Ellie, but she didn't know what they were called so it was a long conversation and Ellie lying under the table and saying she needed the toilet, it was incredibly difficult to have a conversation with him, as I am sure you will all know! I didn't even catch his name which is most annoying!

He started off by saying he wasn't fully aware of the situation but it was an interesting one for him because he was Morrocan,  and that the stories he had heard were different.  At one point he said that she was not performing her motherly duties and that it had nothing to do with breastfeeding.  I asked him if he read the maternal report that I had brought as this wasn't just about breastfeeding, he even started to tell me about some of his staff who breastfeed and his secretary who was sitting next to him!!!  He wouldn't be brought into a discussion of what constituted 'motherly duties'.  He said he was aware that the child was in poor condition but I was unable to ascertain whether this was before or after she had been removed from her mother, I think Ellie left the room at that point to go to the toilet and I was waiting for that shriek of 'muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuum I want you to come'.  I basically said to him, it is important to know you are going to look into this matter and he assured me he would phone me or email me with more information.  He was very amicable and friendly and not at all aghast by my kids who in actual fact were knackered enough to be positively angelic for them!!!  Thinking about it now, Maia sat on my kneee pretty much the entire time and didn't ask for milk once...darn!! " letting her take it anywhere, no matter the time and context in which this happens (offices, corridors). "

We left in a positive note and since during the course of the conversation, I had promised Maia I would help her advocate for the paper clips we also left with the desired clips and the secretary gave the girls a fan each which Maia promptly broke on the way home.  She was most upset about that.

Meltdowns - one, but that's another story!

Lack of connection begets Lack of connection response to Mother Madness

I think what bothers me most in Erica Jongs article is the vilification of attachment parenting, i just cannot conceive how something with the word attachment in it could be perceived as something negative, unless it was the term, 'negative attachment'! or 'attachment disorder'

I guess she did what she felt was right....i just don't imagine ever being able to 'leave' my kids at such a young age and i don't believe it is healthy either. As her daughter says, she was in a fortunate position, (from her point of view) to be able to provide a baby nanny and a pony and private schools.. personally i would have used the money to *stay* with my kids.

Her daughter also says "I could never have raised kids and made money"  and I totally agree here and here is where I am in the position that Erica Jong wasn't in or chose not to be in, in that we have structured our lives in order for me to be able to stay at home and attach to my kids..i can totally see though why her mother felt she had to work...I sometimes wonder how we have managed it so far!!

I am willing to bet Erica Jong wasn't breastfed for long (if at all)...and the assertion that *her* daughter hated breastfeeding is ridiculous and clearly based on misinformation and lack of breastfeeding advice and support

We all love our children and want what's best for them, and here is the kicker..... "She was a million times better a mother to me than her mother had been to her" and  so and so and so....eventually the cycle will be broken......well thats my plan and it ain't perfect by any means!

Me? Sentimental? Yes I cried at Charlene and Scott's wedding

If you ever get the chance to see this little shortfilm (22mins)..it really is wonderful...I may be a sentimental continuum-parenting old fool but this spoke to the mother in me to be there as much as possible right to the end...this film also spoke to me about the need for connection and attachment.  I know from, personal experience, that in times of grief that connection is more needed than at most other times and if it was not not there to begin with then it can lead to all kinds of emotional disasters....so ellie and maia...listen up....i'm your mum...get over it!!! (i'll pay for therapy bills if you so desire)

Meltdowns - none...for me anyway
Losing the Plot - none...so far

You Don't Want To Know

Ok here is why,  i woke up with less than 45mins to get two girls, who between them don't want to brush their teeth. eat breakfast(that doesn't involve doughnut) or get dressed, up, dressed and having breakfast to make it to take Ellie to nursery for 9am, a task which on our other days takes me at least two hours and is not stressful and rushed and we don’t need to be out till after 10. Actually we don’t NEED to be out at all THAT is the key to it all.   I then took a child saying 'I don't want to go', to nursery where I felt compelled to say "pretend I am not here because we are doing this so you get used to me dropping you off and then coming back for you later" when really I want to say 'ok, lets go home then".  Then watch her run off without looking back and me having to stay in another room listening for signs of distress whilst trying to pick up after a two year old in a cornucopia of toys.  Then knowing I would have to rush back to catch the health visitor, who was arriving at same time as nursery finishes because I forget  to let her know we would be late, to defend my parenting, sorry to discuss my parenting and ‘bring her up to speed’.

Anyway, it turned out she was running late too so that worked out beautifully.  I decided the best thing for me to do was to be keeping busy whilst talking to her and our lunch needed making, life goes on. So whilst I was making pumpkin, carrot and lentil soup with the girls running in every few minutes to help by opening stock cubes and plopping them in, or cutting potato or putting veggies into the water, she was asking me if the girls were eating healthily.  She exclaimed that she would NEVER have let her child use a knife at that age, I pointed out that this was not the first time Ellie had used a knife  (she is not dead yet Grow Slow Sunday Herald 2008) and that since she had been attached to me since birth, and seeing me doing this very same task over and over and had progressed through plastic, butter and onto ‘proper’ knife, she was fully equipped with the knowledge and skills in order to perform these everyday necessary, being part of the family type things.  Likewise being around hot water and cookers hence the lack of ‘be careful that’s hot’ type comments that were flying out of her aghast mouth.

Next she brought up the subject of boundaries to which I mentioned natural consequences to which she replied with the inevitable.  In fact before she even had the chance to respond with the inevitable I countered with “Its very common when looking at this kind of parenting for people to automatically go for the OMG BUT WHAT IF THEY WERE TO RUN ON THE ROAD OR PICK UP A LOADED GUN type scenario” In reality though, I am not actually going to allow my child to maim or kill themselves,  because well, BECAUSE I AM NOT A MORON.  Well I didn’t really say that.

Look I said to her in as open and calm as way as possible, I have had these children attached to me since birth, I have maintained my connection with them and still intend to maintain my connection with them for as long as I can.  They understand about the world, age appropriate,  because I have been with them and explaining to them exactly what is going on and how things happen and why since birth and frankly how can attachment possibly be a bad thing, compared to say….unparenting where the parent just sits watching TV all day NOT interacting with their child much.

I try to parent without using coercion, threats, bribery and sometimes I manage!

We briefly talked about the Triple P parenting Course she had been asked to talk to me about by the SS but it turns out that its not in their remit and so she knows nothing about it and doesn’t offer it at her practice.  I said I had looked online and frankly whilst some of it was interesting and (obvious) I was not about to start using time out or any other punitive discipline technique and IF I did go on the course, I would most likely disrupt it with my own views and if it was during the day, my kids would need to come too and they would disrupt it even more.  She laughed knowingly.

Interestingly when I asked her how much of it was actually MY choice to go on the course she didn’t have a straight answer for me but the fact that I was happy for her to come over was a positive sign, meaning if I had refused and even though the SS had specifically stated it was my choice for the course, I could have been in for a whole more world of trouble.  AND even though the SS said they were having no more involvement, she said she was going to speak to them and....and....and...anyway

I dispatched her with the Alfie Khon Unconditional Parenting and we had our lunch on the floor on a towel infront of the TV.

After lunch, we set about going to support our friend at her jewellery launch but once in the car were beset with meltdowns on all fronts.  It turned out, after stopping the car and finding out exactly why Ellie was screaming and flailing, that she was upset because Maia was wearing the hat she had on. The hat Maia always wears, because Ellie wanted to have it as a spare when the one she was wearing got wet.  When I pointed out that I understood her upset and that Maia was actually wearing that hat and she would be upset if Ellie took it, she wailed and stated that when she was unplugged from her seat she was going to grab the hat of Maia’s head.  See, sometimes, car seats are not the devil!!  When Ellie had sufficiently calmed down enough for me to continue driving, we made our way with occasional grumblings of grabbing and askings of would she would be happy to have something grabbed off her.  We arrived with an agreement, that since the hats probably would not get that wet, we would stick with the ones we had on.  THEN, between getting out of the car and walking to the venue, about 3feet something happened…I can’t be entirely sure what and it may well just have been a culmination of a very rushed and stressful day (or doughnut for breakfast), anyway Ellie had a spectacular meltdown which was made worse by me trying to have said meltdown inside the sports centre rather than in the rain or right next to the smokers corner.  So I manage to move everyone inside whilst trying to figure out exactly what the problem was.  It was really a lost cause, I had no clue, she was screaming, I couldn’t understand her, then she was roaring and saying ‘lets go home, I don’t want to be here’.  I decided to just sit.  Maia crawled about the seating area whilst Ellie screamed and I sat.  I was aware of the staff behind the counter but I was mostly focused on not making the meltdown worse by attempting to touch or speak! Then the phone rang and the woman behind the counter got nippy with me and asked me to make her stop  - HA!!! Then several staff went ‘shh’ and to my dismay I used the ‘Ellie the woman on the phone can’t hear’ line.  I wish I hadn’t, simply because I feel it makes Ellie think that woman’s phonecall is more important than Ellie’s feelings.  Anyway it was distraction enough and as quick as it had started, Ellie suddenly stopped and we were on our way minus shoes, a small concession in my eyes.

The jewellery launch was a fraught affair, simply because she wasn’t keen on us touching the stuff, even though they were being careful and knew it was delicate, even though I was crawling on the floor at their height and looking at the things with them, even though I was taking extra care to make sure they were taking extra care…it was too difficult so we got grandma’s present and left.

Home sweet home…sort of, because Maia who had now been woken from two falling asleeps decided not to have her afternoon shloph and spent the rest of the day oscillating between being upset and wanting milk, so not much was done.

BUT for a change,  dinner was actually made! Well ok, half was made, half was oven cooked from the freezer already made, but THAT in my book is enough!

Anyway, Its all kind of ironic because I spend my entire life encouraging Ellie and Maia to discuss their feelings and talk about what is bothering them rather than suppressing hitting pushing kicking grabbing or screaming the place down in the vain hope that they can find ways to deal with their emotions in an effective, affective and healthy manner in the future  and to help them see that what they say and do matters WHEN most of the time it feels like I am keeping all MY  real thoughts and feelings suppressed….hence the phrase ‘you don’t want to know’
