I want to be that mother who can stand up and say I am a strong confident mother and I know what is best for my children. We breastfeed and co sleep, We listen, We include, We eat chocolate and snot smoothies, we trampoline and grow frogs, we sling, we carry and we try and understand and work with our children without resorting to punishments, threats or coercion.

For whom the bell tolls

Unsurprisingly but very annoyingly my diabetes has resurfaced. Back to cooking real food instead of easy oven ready things and not eating chocolate every night.
Fuckitybuggerybollox.

I knew it was only a matter of time. There was no way I could sustain my health with the foods I was eating and definitely not with the amount of chocolate I was on.

I guess I will be going back to almost Paleo again but this time I am aiming to cook only one meal instead of three. It's going to be a take it or leave it home from now on. I'm also going to have to increase my cooking repetoir to more than just chicken stir fry or mince and sweet potato. :(

Buggerz

I've been swimming in denial for about a year now. I know I shouldn't be doing it. I know it's genetic and age related. I know my brother and my father both got it. I know ALL this, yet I just couldn't stop.

Every night, once the kids are finally asleep and I am finally settled on the sofa after my dinner, we eat chocolate.  Not talking a wee bar here, I'm talking the big big ones. The yummy massive ones. And sometimes a bag of something else chocolatey. It is my treat for making it through the day. E. V. E. R. Y. night.

Except sometimes, I have it during the day too. Especially if I am feeling crappy. It boosts me with it's lovely chocolatey seratonin kick. I find I can't feel complete with my meal if I don't seal it with chocolate. I'm totally addicted.

I have a very addictive personality. If it's in the house I can't ignore it. If I want some and don't get it, I get all withdrawy and edgy. It's quite scary.

I knew I needed to cut down but I just kept ignoring it. Making excuses. I deserve it. I've earned it. I NEED IT DAMMIT!!

Well my ticking time bomb has finally been activated. My blood sugar levels are elevated and I have an appointment with the Dr tomorrow who will no doubt tell me to sort out my diet and stop eating my beloved chocolate. I'm still hoping it's all a big error (I know it's not).

The diet recently has mainly consisted of pasta which hasn't helped either. When money is tight, pasta is cheap and easy. Frankly I am sick of pasta, so I won't be sad to cut that down. I just really need to get my arse back into cooking gear and start making proper healthy meals again. I'm going to need to dig out my gestational diabetes pregnancy food diet and start following that again.

Honestly I am not looking forward to any of it. I love my chocolate. Giving it up is hard. If I go through a day without it, that's amazing for me. I had to stop all sugar during my pregnancy and all I did was dream about chocolate.  I even made a blog post about it.  I'm trying new recipes of pseudo chocolate with cocoa and bananas and avocados but it's just not tobelerone :(

The other thing I'm going to need to do now is more exercise. I'm dreading this too especially with my back pain. I guess walking toddler pace just doesn't cut it!

I suppose it explains my extreme tiredness and constant hunger.  I'm really quite depressed about it all which makes me even less inclined to want to take on this huge task of change but I'm going to have to.

Basically I am a big fat mess of unhealthy and it's time to face reality, deal with myself and sort my shit out.

Meltdowns - eldest is going through something, so on the increase
Losing the plot - too tired
Breastfeeding - reduces risk of diabetes but doesn't completely stop it if you still eat rubbish!

Namobloopoo? Nanoonanoo? Nablomopo?

So. Apparently it's blog for a month month. (Thanks Melissa). No idea what it stands for but I am going to try this challenge. I'm currently hiding out in the bath from a seriously mentally sugar filled day. Bloody Halloween. Love it but hate it. Maia has had nothing but chocolate sweets and lollipops all day. She pretended to have her breakfast. She ignored her lunch and mucked about at dinner. Ellie took her sweets to school so they dealt with that side!! No idea how much actual food they had today but the results were not pretty. So I am hiding.

Ok spoke to soon. Hubby's given up trying to deal with two sugared up toddlers and a baby. He's brought Millie in. The other two have followed. I feel like Mrs Large except they are not coming in. I have to get out.

Hmmm blogging everyday for a month? Can I do it???

I'd like to do it with pics but this great app onto phone which WILL make blogging easier, doesn't let me add pics where I want.

Welcome to your kid's future

We took a trip to our local shopping centre because I needed to return a few items and Ellie had been talking about buying 20p sweeties from a machine for about a week and a half.  I am not that keen o the girls buying sweets but I thought how terrible could a 20p machine be? Its probably a wee gumball type machine with minstrels on one side and bouncy balls on the other right?

WRONG

This thing is a monster.  It is right in the entrance so it is basically unavoidable.  It is filled with bubble gum (which I won't let my kids near) and chocolate and hard sweets and bouncy balls in an array of scary scary but of course enticing and exciting colours, shapes and sizes.  It is the most tacky thing I have ever seen come to the South Side of Glasgow!!

The main issue for me(aside from the nagging for it and the sugar) is the E numbers that are in most of these sweets.  They are the kind that are banned in many countries.  The kind that cause hyperactivity and sensitivities.  Some countries have already banned them.   Carmoisine (E122), for instance, is banned in Norway, Sweden, America and Japan. It is a synthetic azo dye which casues allergic reactions and hyperactive behaviour in children.  Quinoline (E104) the yellow colour found in sweets and soft drinks is banned in Japan, Norway, America and Australia.  It is a synthetic dye obtained from coal tar and causes hyperactivity in some children.  Ponceau 4R (E124) which makes the bright red and Sunset Yellow (E110) have been banned in Norway, Sweden, US and Japan.  They also cause hyperactive behaviour in some children.  And don't get me started on the blue sweets.  As I say to Ellie nothing in the world is that blue.  She argues with me that blueberries are blue but I assure her they do not use blueberries in those kind of sweets! If only!

You will notice that UK has not banned ANY of these additives.

"Food additives go a long way to explaining the exponential rise in the number of children in this country diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and other behavioural problems.
Nearly 400,000 prescriptions for drugs to treat ADHD are written each year, an astonishing 90-fold rise since the early 1990s." Article

In a city that boast 1 in 5 kids as obese and having the worst health statistics for diabetes and heart disease, I find it seriously remiss that this 'candy station' is so prominent and frankly should not be available at all.

hyper much?

In addition, having it displayed in the entrance is completely unacceptable and causes many issues and upsets before the shopping experience has even started.

Basically, I want them to remove the station from the centre.

I have started a petition to have the 'candy station' removed from the centre, please, for the sake of your children's health, please sign
